G. Egore Pitir’s novel is an exploration of how personal emotions and world-wide events can shape and change each other. The hectic pace of his novel keeps his American and Afghan characters in constant movement and under constant pressure. Sometimes the pacing is very effective; crises really feel like crises to the reader, and the excitement of how protagonists will figure out what to do and how to respond is absorbing. At other times, chapters seem a bit artificial as families and personal concerns are swept away by yet one more emergency.
What clearly fuels both American and Afghan characters is a passionate dedication to meeting closely-held standards of honor. Both professional and personal standards drive and torment airline pilot Stu and his social advocate wife Angela. From time to time, issues of how to behave with honor seem to make it hard for them to understand each other as people. At those points, their superhero nicknames, Ironman and Angel, separate them from emotional engagement with those around them and even with each other. Afghan characters, especially reluctant revolutionary Kashif, show the same struggles with navigating religious and political definitions of personal and social honorable behavior.
Pitir does readers a service when he expands on the struggles felt by combatants on each side of a long-standing, complex conflict, helping them to understand the nearly borderless relationships between love and hate, between religious fervor and patriotic passion. Readers will absorb understanding about the beliefs of both sides in the existing, real American-Afghan conflict in ways that newspapers and television have not successfully conveyed. Long physical distances and massive cultural differences have made it hard for civilians on both sides to understand the significance and meaning of events as they happen and as they influence leadership decisions for the future.
His overall aim sometimes pushes the pacing of events from hectic to frantic, and some chapters resemble episodes of “Madam Secretary” on acid. For some readers, the need to question what really happened during a crisis will also be an educational experience and one that provides insight into the feelings of those confronted with real conflict. Readers will occasionally wish that characters had more space to display normal human behaviors; perhaps part of Pitir’s lesson is that, given the opportunity, his characters would wish the same thing.
In an era of Islamophobia and two-dimensional villains (or heroes, for that matter), this story is truly refreshing. Upon reading the plot description for “Face of Our Father,” you might think you know exactly what you’re in for. But this is not some run of the mill thriller about a pilot yanked out of retirement to stop a terrorist threat. It may seem that way at first, but as the story wears on, we soon find our notions of good and evil challenged by a complicated international political climate. In terms of morals and ethics alone, the scale of this book is quite massive, and the average reader will find themselves thinking about the story long after it has concluded.
Our first introduction to protagonist Captain Stuart “Ironman” Pierce tells us that he has long dreamed of becoming a hero. This is something of a theme in the book; each time a chapter introduces a major character, we are told about the prayers they made in their youth. This is a big part of what humanizes each character, and blurs the moral lines of the story. Will Stu become a hero? More importantly, is he ready for what that might actually mean? And is the reader prepared to pick sides in this battle, knowing that each character is fighting for what they truly believe in?
There are many books about terrorist conspiracies and the heroes who stop them, but this is one of the few books that makes us truly question the validity of such tropes. How can there be such a thing as a hero, when the other side of the battlefield is full of people who perceive him to be a villain? And what will happen when he realizes that his actions have consequences, sometimes on his own life? At the end of this book, the characters are fundamentally changed in a way that almost feels too raw, too human to be a work of fiction.
This author has excelled at his craft. The upcoming sequel, “Face of Our Mother,” is certain to provide as much food for thought as this first installment. Anyone who is interested in thrillers revolving around crime and terrorism, or even anyone who is interested in having their moral viewpoint challenged, will gain a lot from reading this book.
